Presentation

  • The lectures delivered are intended to be of interest to any person working in the field of electronic structure theory and willing to discover or deepen the mathematical aspects of the methods. PhD students, post-docs or any academic are welcome!
  • To provide a detailed presentation of subjects, we have chosen to give a good amount of time to each lecturer. The workshop will thus involve only two lecturers over a three-day period.

Program

Two lectures will be proposed:

  • 1) Operator theory for electronic structure calculation by Eric CANCES, Ecole des Ponts and INRIA, Paris, France

Indicative program (subject to changes and extension):

- Hilbert spaces
- Linear operators on Hilbert spaces
- Self-adjointness
- Spectra of self-adjoint operators: point vs continuous spectrum, discrete vs essential spectrum
- Some examples in quantum chemistry: N-body Schödinger equation, Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham hamiltonians
- Some examples in solid state physics: Bloch theory, periodic Kohn-Sham hamiltonians

Download Eric Cancès' slides

  • 2) Principles of density-functional theory by Trygve HELGAKER Centre for Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Oslo, Norway

Indicative program (subject to changes and extension):

- Hohenberg–Kohn theory (Hohenberg–Kohn theorem and concavity, Lieb variation principles, v-representable densities, etc.)
- Levy–Lieb constrained-search theory, N-representable densities, the Levy–Lieb constrained-search functional, etc
- Lieb convex-conjugate theory, convex functions and convex conjugation, the Lieb convex-conjugate functional, etc
- Discontinuity and nondifferentiability of the universal functional conditions, etc.
- and much more.

Download Trygve Helgaker's slides

In addition, we would like to point out the following books written by three members of Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions:

- Brezis, Haim, Functional analysis, Sobolev spaces and partial differential equations. Universitext. Springer, New York, 2011. xiv+599. For a particular focus on partial differential equations.

- Ciarlet, Philippe G. Linear and Nonlinear Functional Analysis with Applications. Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Philadelphia, PA, 2013. The fundamental facts of functional analysis and differential geometry by an expert in elasticity and numerical analysis.

- Penot Jean Paul, Analysis. From Concepts to Applications, Universitext, Springer, London, 2016. The basic elements of topology, functional analysis, convexity, optimization, integration, Sobolev spaces and partial differential equations.

Practical details

Location of the mini-school

The mini-school will take place on the Jussieu campus of Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), 4 place Jussieu, 75005 Paris.

Subway (Metro) lines 7 or 10: get off at "Jussieu" station.

From the main entrance of the campus, go to Tower 16. Take the stairs or the elevator to the third level. Find corridor 15-16, and then the room 309. This is the seminar room of Laboratoire Jacques-Louis Lions.

Registration fees

To facilitate the participation of young researchers, no registration fees will be asked.

Housing

We have tried our best to offer housing in student-type accomodation at FIAP Jean Monnet, 30 Rue Cabanis, 75014 Paris.

See details about housing arrangement on the page List of registered people

Lunches

12:15-14:00 at Restaurant L'Ardoise, Jussieu campus, between Tower 25 and Tower 26. Lunch is offered to all registered participants to the mini-school.

See the list of registered participants on the page List of registered people

Arriving by Plane

Both Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Paris-Orly international airports are connected to the center of Paris by RER (fast regional railway) or coaches. The RER is connected to the subway (Metro) network. It costs about 10 euros to go from either airport to the center of Paris and it takes about one hour.

For more information, check the Paris airports website.

From Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport

From the airport take RER line B. Stop at "St-Michel-Notre-Dame" station. Take subway line 10 direction "Austerlitz" and stop at "Jussieu" station.

From Paris-Orly airport

From the airport take the monorail "OrlyVal" to "Antony". Take RER line B. Stop at "St-Michel-Notre-Dame" station. Take subway line 10 direction "Austerlitz" and stop at "Jussieu" station.

Arriving by Train

All the railway stations are in downtown Paris and are connected to the subway network. For train reservation, check the SNCF web site.

From any train station follow the sign "M" to the subway.

Arriving by Subway or Bus

For more information on the RER, Subway and Bus systems, check the RATP web site, and in particular the Subway and RER map.
